A MEMBERSHIP VIEWPOINTThe Metal Boat Society circa 2011 is comprised of over 250 members worldwide drawn from some 24 countries. Members share personal interest in some aspect of boats constructed of metal. Interests span design, construction, maintenance and repair/restoration, and other related things. Some members are cruising or live-aboards. Need to renew? Then click here. The society is operated entirely by unpaid member volunteers. Society officers, president, vice president, treasurer, and an executive board, plus a cadre of non-flag volunteers manage the affairs of the society. This group acts to provide all the physical and on-line resources of the Society. Officers of the MBS are required to commit to physically attend three meetings of the Board per annum. Other board members may be located anywhere, world wide - and can attend meetings via Skype or other active communication. Members beyond the shores of the U.S. home base of the society are especially encouraged to participate in society management. All that is required to participate is a computer and a connection to the Internet ... and the willingness to contribute some time and effort and, of course, your opinions and ideas. MEMBERSHIP BENEFITSRegular Membership in the Metal Boat Society includes postal delivery of the Metal Boat Quarterly. The PDF version is available on-line to all members. Members desiring only the PDF version of the MBQ (in lieu of mailed "hard" copies) may opt for an On-line Membership, avoiding postal surcharges. Membership in the Metal Boat Society includes full access to the Metal Boat Forum for all enrollment options. MBS members may post new queries, respond to posts, upload and download attachments and files, including current issues of the Metal Boat Quarterly, and vote in polls that may be posted. While members may post any text and picture in most spots, some topics do remain moderated. The online Metal Boat Forum is accessible either through the website or by logging in directly to the forum pages. Membership in the Metal Boat Society includes access to the online Ship's Store for all members. The Store serves as both a place to post dues payments and to purchase items like MBQ back issues, books and logowear. Membership in the Metal Boat Society provides some benefit at the Metal Boat Festivals. While membership is not required for attendance, members find themselves in more familiar company. Members receive discounts on Metal Boat Festival registration. Registered attendees who are able to bring and show their boats at the Festival receive reduced cost or free mooring while in attendance. Commercial annual membership comes down to exposure. It includes postal delivery of the print edition of the Metal Boat Quarterly worldwide, a feature article about your business in the MBQ upon sign-up, a business-card-size ad in every MBQ issue, with space for display ads available at reduced cost, free display space at the annual Metal Boat Festival, a free listing in the online resources directory at the MBS website and, of course, full Metal Boat Forum access. Complimentary electronic delivery of the MBQ is also available from the website. Not last in importance, members get to vote for Society leadership. A Word about Membership CostsNo one, of course, desires to waste money. People want good value for what they invest. As you wrestle with the issue of investing in a membership to support M.B.S., one member suggests you consider this: The dues amount is more or less equal to the price of a how-to book! That's one book! Given that membership includes a subscription to the Metal Boat Quarterly, the only magazine of its kind, and full access to the over 10,000 posts and articles in the Metal Boat Forum and weighed against the cost of a properly constructed vessel, that initial investment pales in significance, and would seem rather a no-brainer. At least that's our opinion. In fact, we encourage you to check it out on us, and make this limited offer: Any new member who decides, for whatever reason, that paid membership in M.B.S. is not what it's cracked up to be, simply drop an email to the membership office and your dues will be refunded in full. No questions asked, although we would appreciate any feedback you might care to provide. Just let us know within 30 days of signing up, and we'll either credit your charge card or mail a check, whichever is appropriate. MEMBERSHIP OPTIONSConvinced?
