The Message from the President

Hello, fellow metal boat enthusiasts. Welcome to the Metal Boat Society. Some of the “hands on” running of the organization still needs to be done here in the Pacific Northwest of The USA where we are incorporated, and it has been exciting to see the people who have stepped up to help with that, but there are many more parts to the Metal Boat Society – both new and old.

Although our non-profit corporation started as a small group in 1987, it grew, and in 2000 this website was added with all its information about the Society & metal boats, it’s ship’s store, and it’s Forum - it has definitely been a wonderful addition. As the Society had grown, we felt a need to be able to reach out and share with the rest of the world. Although we still have the Quarterly magazine going out to all the members, whether virtually or physically, what we can also share here on the Forum is fantastic. Be sure and send if you need any help getting started on the Forum as we are hoping to see more of you participating. Some of you may not need answers to any questions, but if not then others might need the answers you can give them.

Once a year in August The Metal Boat Society has what is called the Metal Boat Festival. As you have noticed here on the website (or in our Fall Quarterly if you are a member), again this year we were able to have another fun and informative Festival. The members who attended (Commercial, Regular & Virtual – from as far away as Nova Scotia and as near as a mile) were excited to participate and shared some great ideas. We thank all of these people who were able to be there. How exciting to have people travel thousands of miles to donate their time and share their knowledge of Metal Boat Building, repairing and even cruising with the rest of us who were in attendance. The Commercial Members who attended were able to share with us what they have to offer, & many different companies in the boating world, from all over the country, donated items to make the weekend more fun.

As we know some of you can’t attend the yearly Festival for a variety of reasons, so for a long time now we have been encouraging members & friends throughout the world to get together and have a “mini-fest”. A mini-fest is usually ½ to ¾ of a day long - just people getting together to talk, show their pictures, and share where they are in the Metal boating world. Some of them get together in a boat shop, some in a restaurant, some at a home, maybe just a few in someone’s boat - some of us really do need to get together just for a bit of encouragement to keep the dream alive, and some of us can share that dream that we are already living. If you do have a mini-fest be sure and send the editor or the web administrator some pictures and a bit of write up so others can read about it. We are hoping by more of you getting together for mini-fest eventually we can start spreading out to other areas for our yearly Festival. Wouldn’t that be exciting?!

Our new Editor, Dee, is excited about working with the Quarterly magazine and as you members can see it looks great and we have been able to expand it back to a larger size. The magazine takes a bit of work to put together so be sure and share your ideas or articles by sending them by as that will make Dee’s job much easier. (We are all volunteers from the top on down so sharing the load is a plus.) Here at the office I have been receiving messages from members wanting to see more articles about repairs & remodels. Any other ideas that you would like to see written?

So if you aren’t a member of the Metal Boat Society yet, we who are would love to have you be a part of our fun, informative organization. Check out the Forum - you can register as a guest (read-only privileges), or if you find that you wish to post on the forum or read recent Quarterlies then go to the Ship’s Store and get signed up as a member. The tables of content for previous Quarterlies are available on the Ship's Store. And remember, any questions, be sure and send .
